That was when something became crystal clear: my coworkers hadn’t become monsters, they were still the kind and caring people I thought they were. The entire engineering department definitely made their criticisms known, but I didn’t find people questioning my ability as a manager, throwing around insults, or saying anything that that illustrated why I was feeling so targeted. In fact, what I found was that people had some well put together arguments about why they felt this policy was a bad idea. There was no one saying mean things about me or attacking my efficacy directly. I wanted to give them direct feedback that they had hurt my feelings.Īs I went back through that Friday afternoon chat log, I was shocked to see that no one had been hurling insults. When Sunday rolled around, I decided I wanted to look back at our Slack conversations and see which one of my coworkers was being the rudest and the most unreasonable. I replayed everything that happened in my head and each time got more frustrated with the way people reacted. I went home for the weekend and stewed in my frustration. It seemed people weren’t valuing my work or my judgment. What had happened to my amazing coworkers that were so kind and wonderful? I felt attacked and diminished. After an afternoon of going back and forth, I walked away feeling emotionally drained. No one agreed with this policy, and they made it known over seemingly hundreds of Slack pings. What happened next was that, from my point of view, the engineering team completely lost it. It was a treat to be collaborating with lifetime learners and natural teachers, the kind of engineers that you would want on any team.Ībout three months in, on a Friday afternoon, we introduced a new company-wide policy that I felt was relatively benign. As engineering manager for the team charged with working on our Talent product, I got to work closely with brilliant people I really respected. When I joined Stack Overflow almost a year ago, I was blown away by how kind and generous all my coworkers were, and the engineering team is no exception. The second thing we are prioritizing requires a bit of a story. Paying down this debt will continue to be a priority as we work to get our mods best-in-class tools to manage their communities. The thing I’ve seen our Community Managers push for the most is updating these dated tools, some of which haven’t been touched since we first launched! The team formerly known as DAG (Developer Advocacy and Growth), now part of the Community team, started by rolling out the Tag Synonyms Refresh and the improved Moderator Dashboard. To kick off these changes, we started with the tools that our moderators and power users rely on to make Stack Overflow the best site for developers online. We’ve been working on exciting things the past few months to make the site more welcome, diverse, and inclusive. Being a part of the team helping to guide the direction and growth of community is an incredible honor. Imagine, for example, that we've just been introduced to the MNIST problem, and have begun working on it, knowing nothing at all about what hyper-parameters to use. In practice, when you're using neural nets to attack a problem, it can be difficult to find good hyper-parameters. I've just been supplying values which work pretty well. Up until now I haven't explained how I've been choosing values for hyper-parameters such as the learning rate, \(η\), the regularization parameter, \(λ\), and so on. 5/9/2024 0 Comments Elder futhark runes fontRunes were made for writing various extinct Germanic languages (North and West). If enough people download this, I’ll add other features and other keyboard apps for other ancient languages. Inspired by Apple doing something I never thought they’d do and adding unprecedented coverage of unicode code points in their latest OS, I made a Futhorc keyboard for iOS. If you know anything about this, please let me know. I have links to some hints on how to install. Check out the futhorc layout for linux I made. Just like with Mac OS X, I made my own, not having seen other options. This is just Futhorc, I would like to ultimately make Mac clones of all the awesome ones BabelStone made. Check it out here, where there are also instructions for installing it. I haven’t found much made by others, so I made my own. It’s also just a good site overall for language nerds, with tons of good information and other language families. I feel this page has the best layouts for Windows and their futhorc keyboard is what I based the one I made for Mac OS X on. I tend to focus on Futhorc because it’s a broader set that I feel is more appropriate for modern English (just as it was for Old English). There were others as well, but these are some of the main ones you’ll encounter.Īnyway, what you will need to configure on your system is a way to type runes and usually it will not be geared for one set of runes or another. There was also Younger Futhark, which actually had fewer runes than Elder Futhark. Futhark was expanded with additional symbols to make Futhorc, which was used by Old English and Old Frisian. There was the original runic alphabet, Elder Futhark, used by older Old Norse. Miraculously, the latest iOS as of this writing (11) has runes and various other ancient scripts covered by default! iOS doesn’t allow you to install fonts so if you aren’t able to upgrade, then you’re going to miss out on unicode runes □ Keyboards Please someone who knows tell me because I’m curious. I’m not familiar enough with the situation there beyond I’m pretty sure you won’t be covered by default and need to install fonts (if that’s possible?). Code2000 - font that set out to cover the whole unicode range, including runes.Runes (ᚠᚢᚦᚨᚱᚲ) on the Web - has links to several good rune fonts. Here are two links that can help but you can also search for “unicode rune font”: If you’re on a modern desktop system that supports true type fonts (so Windows, Mac, Linux, others), then you simply need to install at least one font that covers the range. If the below paragraph looks like gibberish, then you need to install a font. Runes are in the unicode standard yet most computer systems don’t by default have fonts to cover that range. So this is specifically about the angular runes used in many Germanic languages before they switched over to using Roman characters (becoming “latin-based” as computer people like to say), but much of what I’m saying here applies to other ancient character sets. Even emoji adhere to these rules more or less, allowing different types of phones and computers to see a kimono, laughing face or taco, albeit with subtle variations in style.īelieve it or not, you can do this with character sets for many extinct languages too! There are caveats because naturally, many man hours go into making sure widely spoken languages function well with modern systems, while little thought is put into making the user experience for language nerds, pagans and bewildered Vikings who accidentally stepped into a time warp as smooth as possible. We could be on radically different computers, but you and I will see the same 大. The code points used here don’t overlap with Roman characters. Your computer will render that with some Japanese font and that won’t change the meaning of the text. I type out a Japanese sentence like this 大阪へようこそ and I don’t need to specify the font for it to be legible and recognizable as Japanese text. Modern languages don’t have to deal with these kinds of limitations usually. That’s fine if you’re able to force the text to use a certain font and only that font or if the final product is an image, not text. You change to a different font, you get an a instead of an ᚪ. So in short, there are fonts out there that let you write runes or other ancient sets of characters, but they map the symbols to Roman characters. I wrote a post with this same title ages ago on my old blog, which I don’t really feel like bringing back (something about being haunted by things I wrote 15 years ago).
